First Flight of Avro Canada Jetliner 10-August -1949

On August 10, 1949, the Avro Canada C-102 Jetliner soared into history as North America’s first jet-powered airliner and the second of its kind in the world, trailing the British de Havilland Comet by just 13 days.

Designed built by Avro Canada, the Jetliner was a sleek, medium-range aircraft powered by four Rolls-Royce Derwent engines. It exceeded speeds of 800 km/h during its maiden flight, showcasing Canada’s cutting-edge aviation capabilities. Despite its promising performance and interest from businessman Howard Hughes, the project was shelved by the Canadian Government in 1951 to prioritize military aircraft development, particularly the CF-100 Canuck. Though only one prototype was ever completed, the Jetliner remains a symbol of Canadian innovation and ambition in the early jet age.
